Ripit is a Mac simple DVD ripper that cooks, but we're not dumb enough to think it's perfect. Let us know what features you like, don't like or would love to see here.

    Rip to iTunes-compatible format planned

I would prefer that the movie be ripped to an iTunes-compatible format like MP4 which is significantly smaller. HandBrake does this, but a simpler interface and automagic insertion of iTunes tags for the movie would be a huge advantage for your app.

Overall, I think your app needs to provide fu... more

We believe that with disk space becoming cheaper by the day, there is significant value in keeping the original movie with all of it's subtitles, menus, alternate angles and audio intact.

That being said, we are currently working on a high-speed MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoder that will export ripped movies in iTunes (and iPod/iPhone/PSP/PS3/Xbox/Wii) compatible formats -- many, many(!) times faster than Handbrake.

Stay tuned! We have some very exciting things coming down the pipe. :)

    Remove all protections started

    Can RipIt remove all protections?
From movie dvd's and games cd's?
    If not, it's a feature req :-)

The short answer is, "Yes, for movies."

We wanted this first release of RipIt to be something that even a non-technical user (Hi, mom!) can instantly appreciate, so we decided to concentrate on making the basic process of getting a movie onto your Mac as *simple* as possible.

As developers, the easiest thing in the world *for us* to do would be to just start throwing buttons, knobs and cryptic checkboxes onto the screen. We think that people deserve more from us, so we thought it best to hold off on these and other features until we figure out how to make them as natural and intuitive as they can possibly be.

    Suggestions are welcome! :)

Allow user to rip only the movie with selected languages

User can choose to ripp the movie and only the language he wants.

So, we can have a dvd rip in a small format with a best compression if we can choose the dvd package size.

Blu-ray & Other App Input planned

Add Blu-ray support and make it so that apps like DVD2One and DVDRemaster can input your file. To get those apps to accept your file, I had to "show package contents" and copy the VIDEO_TS folder to the desktop. Not a big deal, but it will confuse Mom.

Also, it would help to know who... more

We're considering adding support for BluRay, but as you noted, not many people are clamoring to put 50gb movies on their hard-disks... yet. ;)

DVD2One and DVDRemaster would have to make trivial changes to support ".dvdmedia" packages (which are really just specially-marked folders, as you've discovered.)

To your final point/concern: We're not the AppZapper or Disco folks (who rock by the way), nor are we in any way affiliated with this "Shrinky-DVD-Ink" -- We're also not hiding anything... check out our app, and if you like it or find it useful, consider purchasing a copy when we release 1.0; What you see is what you get.

    Know problematic DVDs started

Have a section on the website that lists all the problem dvds that have been reported

We'll be adding a "Known to Rip" indicator in an upcoming release.

Basically, when you stick a disc in the drive, it'll give you a thumbs up if that disc is known to be trouble-free. Conversely, discs that are known to be problematic will give you a thumbs down, and an opportunity to be notified by email when the problem with that disc is fixed. Comments?

multiple discs from multiple drives simultanously? started

clearly indicate if multiple discs can simultaneously be ripped at once -- even if multiple instances of the program need to be run

There's nothing in our engine that prevents us from offering this. It's more of a user interface problem.

rip TV shows to a file per episode

Ripping TV shows for use with media centers (i.e. XBMC, Plex) is a multi-step pain in the butt with most tools. It would be great if RipIt could rip the episodes of a show off a DVD and put them into individual files per episode, properly named, i.e. "Star Trek - S01E01.VOB".

    Continue to develop the project . . . it's a great start!

Developers should continue to strive for perfection. Unfortunately, MacTheRipper is now obsolete so the Mac community needs a stable, reliable, relatively inexpensive program to do the job. If this program continues to develop, you'll have the Mac market cornered. You will literally be the on... more

    Front Row detection

I've been using the trail for a couple of days now and it seems like a really nice program.

I know that you've said that Handbrake and the DVD player can see the resulting file/bundle (Which they do) .. but what about Front Row? That doesn't seem to detect the file/bundle as a DVD to play. Is th... more

    Option to select titles

The ability to single out different titles from a disc. I have a lot of discs with TV shows on them, with about 3-4 episodes a disc. Being able to just rip single episodes for conversion/storage would be cool.

Love it, but would love the H.264 option

Love it, but would love the H.264 option

Obviously, many of us use Handbrake, it is a great tool to get DVD media to H.264 (smaller file sizes).

But Handbrake does not make an exact copy of the DVD, menus, angles, etc.

Handbrake also seems to screw up many TV DVD shows aspect ratio (on the ATV... more

Front Row needs to accept .dvdmedia files

Either you need to trick Front Row into accepting .dvdmedia files or maybe you can make folders with the disc's title as the name with the VIDEO_TS file inside like MacTheRipper. Just keep it simple!

I can't agree with all the people here that keeps asking new features like burning, main feature extraction, mp4 exporting, 10.4 compatibility etc... I'd rather prefer you to focus on the main feature of the application, "simply" making it the best DVD ripper available for Mac OS X. I'm... more

Allow multiple ripping at the same time from diffent sources

Ripping one dvd after one may take a couple of hours, but if we could rip several dvds at the same time (and if we have a fast mac) from multiple drives or sources (could be a folder or a file) then it could save us a lot of time.

Add the ability to modify DVD layout/languages/subs/extras.

I often like to remove all the special features and languages/subs to make room for the main feature, but still keep the menu. There are few programs that let you easily modify the DVD content in such a fashion.

Those that do, often screw it up, making the DVD have bad cells and mastering errors... more

    Conflict: RipIt 1.1.3 & DVD2One

Attempting a "full disc copy" with DVD2One on a RipIt .dvdmedia package or the VIDEO_TS folder within produces consistent "cannot read vob fileset" error messages.

Extracting a single title ("movie only copy") with DVD2One works fine.

Stop the DVD player from playing when App is running started

Stop the DVD player from running when Ripit is on and you insert the DVD

We're looking into doing this automatically... but in the meantime, if you go into the "CDs and DVDs" section of "System Preferences" -- you can set the action that occurs when you insert a video DVD. (We set our machines to have RipIt launch instead of DVD player!) :)
